Tirzepatide Medication

In a phase 3 double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, 2539 adults with a BMI of 30 or more (or 27 or more with weight-related complications excluding diabetes) were assigned to receive once-weekly, subcutaneous tirzepatide (5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg) or placebo for 72 weeks. The primary endpoints were the percentage change in weight from baseline and achieving a weight reduction of 5% or more. Results showed that tirzepatide, at all doses, led to substantial weight loss compared to placebo, with the highest dose (15 mg) showing the most significant reduction. Notably, a substantial proportion of participants in the tirzepatide groups achieved a 20% or more reduction in body weight. Tirzepatide also improved cardiometabolic measures. The most common adverse events were gastrointestinal, mostly mild to moderate, and occurred mainly during dose escalation. This trial demonstrates that tirzepatide provides substantial and sustained weight reduction in individuals with obesity over 72 weeks.
